Angus Wilson was born and raised in Scotland and has lived in numerous cities throughout the UK as well as spending a period of time working in California. He has worked as a professional artist for nearly twenty years during which his work has varied greatly. Originally pursuing photography, film and animation at art college, no one would say that his path to a fine art career was traditional. He then pursued a career in television and video, as well as the computer entertainment market. Angus worked as a director, producer, editor and animator. During this successful period, his traditional painting functioned as a sideline. However, in 2004, with the growing popularity of his work, he made the decision to pursue his fine art career full time.
Angus has been involved in numerous shows and has displayed work internationally. He has recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. He works mainly in oil and acrylic, but also enjoys watercolor. He has painted and drawn his whole life and has been displaying and selling work for over fourteen years.
Artist Statement
Recently, I have discovered a new and lasting passion in painting Still Lifes. In the first, I love the relative simplicity of the objects I choose to paint--the simple, clean shapes and colors of fruit, vases, bowls etc; and, yet, within such simple subjects, so much is portrayed of my style, passion and technique. Every painter leaves his mark on the canvas--it’s impossible to hide--whether with brush, pencil or knife. We can always see the artist and recognize his work with how he paints. Even at the very base level of these ‘simple’ subjects, the fingerprints and identity of the artist can be witnessed. It’s a key to the recognition and style of every artist and, in turn, my style and approach is reflected strongly within these works.
Additionally, I find Still Life subjects to be a constant source of inspiration simply by how I present and arrange the objects. I can paint these groupings tirelessly with a combination of new arrangements, different lighting conditions, alternate settings and different points of view--each painting as fresh and new as its predecessor.
Finally, I enjoy the control inherent in painting Still Lifes. From the very first moment, when I choose the objects to use or discard and their placement and lighting, I can exert a level of control that I do not find in many other genres such as landscape or portraiture. It is a level of control that I find freeing for my work.
